Our 8th graders were in the audience on Wednesday, March 28, at the Free Library to meet and listen to Philly’s own Leslie Odom Jr. Leslie Odom Jr shared his personal story and discussed his new book “Failing Up: How To Rise Above, Do Better, And Never Stop Learning.”
Leslie Odom Jr talked to the students about determination, pursuing your dreams and to never stop learning. The students received autographed copies of his book.The event was part of a free library program that connects students with authors to promote a love of reading.

Philadelphia’s Leslie Odom, Jr. skyrocketed to fame in 2015 as the originator of the role of Aaron Burr in the Broadway mega-smash Hamilton. For this he won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical and a Grammy Award as a principal soloist on the show’s Original Broadway Cast Recording. Odom, Jr.’s other work includes a self-titled debut album and appearances in Smash, Gotham, and the feature film Murder on the Orient Express, among many other shows and films. In Failing Up he details the years of work that went into his eventual success, including his Broadway debut in Rent at 17, his studies in Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama, and the rejections that made him a stronger person and performer.
